For about 30 years, parts of the Harz Mountains have been protected as a national park, to the delight of outdoor fans and Mother Nature. But there is also plenty on offer for culture lovers.
Highest mountain range in northern Germany, green protection zone for animals and plants, beloved local recreation area and vacation destination: The Harz mountains with their partly rugged mountain world are a unique and species-rich wilderness. The national park area is almost entirely forested and many tree regions are simply left to themselves. It goes without saying that this is a wonderful place to go hiking - a network of trails more than 8,000 kilometers long stretches through beech and spruce forests and across tree-free mountain heath all the way up to the Brocken, at 1,141 meters above sea level the highest peak in the low mountain range.
On the way, with luck, rare species such as black stork or lynx can be discovered. There are also numerous routes and bike parks for mountain bikers in the Harz Mountains. And all kinds of cozy towns and cities for culture lovers and connoisseurs. Goslar, for example, with its narrow medieval streets, colorful marketplace and cozy cafés - the old town and Goslar's Rammelsberg ore mine have even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
No more parking hassles in the Harz: If you want to get to the starting point of hikes or to historical monuments in the region, you can use the HATIX - the Harz vacation ticket - to travel on all public streetcars and buses in the district of Harz as well as selected routes in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz. New with this offer: the district of Goslar and the Altkreis Osterode. More info: click here
By the way, you can find tips on how to travel comfortably and inexpensively on long-distance and local trains with Deutsche Bahn here.
The special tip: A good place to go in the national park is the TorfHaus visitor center near Altenau with interactive exhibits and tourist information.
