Herrenhäuser Gardens in Hanover

Lower Saxony's capital is a colorful metropolis with a lot of flair and character. This also includes a veritable castle - and its gardens are among the most beautiful in Europe!

Already in the 17th century, Herrenhausen Palace, a few kilometers northwest of the Hanover city The palace was built in the Baroque style, along with its historic town hall. Later it was redesigned in the spirit of classicism - and around it were created the Herrenhäuser Gardens, which today are among the most beautiful parks in Europe. They are divided into three main areas. Ideal for strolling is the idyllic Georgengarten, which is kept in the style of English landscape parks - among about 11,000 different plants from various climatic zones, many rare species of cacti can be seen here. The Berggarten next door delights its visitors with blooming orchids and tropical plants. The center of the complex is the Great Garden, with its baroque ornaments and magnificent water features, the maze and a variety of native and exotic plants, it is considered the largest baroque garden in the Republic. In addition, the parks provide a stylish backdrop for beautiful events - ranging from theater to fireworks festivals.

The special tip: Very worth seeing in the Great Garden is the historic grotto - Hanover's honorary citizen Niki de Saint Phalle has transformed the vault into a magical play of color, light and shadow.
