A world-famous concert hall, 60 museums, 45 theaters and a Phototriennale of international renown - Hamburg's culture is diverse and cosmopolitan. This year, the city on the Elbe once again opens its doors to culture, celebrates birthdays and shows art from all over the world. Have a read and be part of it!
It is one of the most important photo events within Germany: The Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, which took place for the first time in 1999 and since then has also attracted international photographers, artists and curious people from all over the world.
Every three years, it is organized in cooperation with Hamburg's major museums, exhibition venues, cultural institutions, galleries and many other organizers. Under a common exhibition title, various photo exhibitions illuminate current trends in photography. This year's theme: 'Currency'; it is intended to invite reflection on the power of photography. Why power? Because images are omnipresent today, because they depict our world and thus create knowledge and meaning.
This year, all photography fans can look forward to the Triennial in the period from May 20 to September 18. International artists such as Akinbode Akinbiyi and Martha Rosler will be showing their works, which range from experimental shots to documentary photography. The exhibitions will be accompanied by a series of other events and a multi-day festival that runs from June 2-6. You can find all information about the Triennale here.
At the same time as the festival, the Triennale Expanded will also be launched, presenting 12 projects by independent photographers, artists, curators or collectives from Hamburg who were able to apply via an open call last year. All projects selected by the jury that made it into the Triennale Expanded are innovative, refer to the theme 'Currency' and use very different formats: Performances, interactive actions, video works and much more.
In addition to the 10 cultural institutions collaborating on the Triennale this year, there are of course many other cultural highlights attracting visitors to the Elbe for a cultural trip, for example the Elbphilharmonie with its concerts and the Plaza as a visitor magnet, the musicals located on the other side of the Elbe, the new Harry Potter theater experience or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Speicherstadt. Not to mention that Hamburg's newest concert hall - the Elbphilharmonie - will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2022.
Since its opening in 2017, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg has been one of the world's best concert halls in terms of acoustics and programming. More than 3,000 concerts with a total of 3.5 million listeners have already taken place here. Fifteen million people have walked across the freely accessible plaza to admire the view over the Hanseatic city and the Elbe. So if you haven't heard a concert in this unique setting yet, you should definitely get tickets for the Elbphilharmonie Summer.
