A sight like in a painting: High mountains, waterfalls and forests define the scenario around Lake Königssee, the cleanest lake in Germany. And it's wonderfully quiet, too: only electric boats are allowed here.

By train to the Königssee and the Berchtesgaden National Park: Plan arrival

The fact that motorboats are not allowed on Lake Königssee at the foot of the Watzmann can be traced back to Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, who decreed in 1909: No noise on Lake Königssee. After all, the man had his hunting ground here. The many excursionists and summer visitors who book themselves into Schönau am Königssee every year still thank him today: the eight-kilometer-long lake, framed by steep mountain slopes, is considered the cleanest lake in the entire country. And we're talking drinking water quality!

If you want to get an overview of the beauty of the lake, the best way is to take a boat ride on one of the neat electric boats that glide silently over the waters: There is the island of Christlieger with the statue of St. John of Nepomuk to discover and the Falkenstein, you drive past the Watzmann and the church of St. Bartolomä with its domed towers. You will also see the Schrainbach waterfall as it plunges into the Königssee from a massive height of 80 meters. At the latest when the boat captain blows the famous echo wall with his flugelhorn, the illusion is perfect: we have landed in the middle of the most beautiful Heimatfilm!
