High mountains, deep valleys, crystal clear mountain rivers - and majestically towering above it all is the Watzmann. There are regions in the world that have not directly fallen short in the distribution of natural beauty and grace. If you take a look around the Berchtesgaden National Park, the only German national park in the Alps right on the border with Austria, you will come to the conclusion that the 210-square-kilometer national park is one of them. It is the core of the Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Region, which has been listed by UNESCO since 1990. The park's philosophy is as simple as it is ambitious: Let nature be nature! Here, plants and animals can live undisturbed in a natural environment. Accordingly, hikers, climbers and mountain bikers in the national park are also guided by the protection of flora and fauna.
They can enjoy the beauty of their surroundings on clearly marked trails, the rest: taboo! Hikers, for example, have a 250-kilometer-long hiking network at their disposal; they can observe marmots and golden eagles on their tours, find gentian and edelweiss (don't pick them!), enjoy the Königssee lake or stay at the hearty "Kehlsteinhaus" mountain inn. Traditionally, the national park is also a place of longing for climbers. Under the motto "nature-compatible climbing", five climbing sites have been defined here - the rest of the original rocky landscape is to be preserved and is considered a "quiet zone". Mountain bikers can also enjoy six elaborated routes in the Berchtesgaden National Park. All visitors should be given on the way: This is alpine territory. Sturdy shoes, warm clothing and maps are essential if your enjoyment is to remain undiminished. Those who have questions in this regard can, at the beginning of their excursions in Berchtesgaden itself, obtain from the "Haus der Berge" all the information concerning the National Park and its possibilities.
