The epithet "Töwerland" (magic land) is fitting for Lower Saxony's perhaps most beautiful island - here, visitors' everyday stress is whisked away in an instant. There are several reasons for this.

By train and ferry to Juist: Plan arrival

The deceleration begins already after arrival of the ferry from Norddeich in the port of Juist. There, no buses or cabs are waiting for passengers, but horse-drawn carts and handcarts. The approximately 17-kilometer-long East Frisian island (its maximum width for this is only about 500 slender meters) is largely car-free, and the paradisiacal tranquility quickly shows its effect on vacationers. The best way to explore "Töwerland" is on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage. Nothing disturbs the peace of the intact nature of the island with its salt marshes, an enchanting forest and the Hammersee, the largest freshwater lake of the East Frisian Islands.

Highlight for visitors are, of course, the long white beaches that stretch along the entire north coast - ideal for swimming in the summer, the Baywatch watches in many places. If the weather is not so good, beach walks are excellent. Or you can stroll along the nature and art trail that winds its way across the dunes. Recreational sailors like to anchor in the harbor in Juist's main town - here you can also learn to sail or book a beginner's course in kite surfing.

A very special thing for vacationers is the Wadden Sea. Due to the pronounced tides, a huge wetland emerges twice a day in the region, habitat for about 10,000 different species of animals and plants. Lugworm, cockle, wadden snail, common shore crab and North Sea shrimp are the famous "Small Five" of the mudflats, and younger vacationers in particular are enthusiastically on the lookout for the small sea creatures.

To all this beauty Juist has set itself major goals for the future. One major topic is sustainability: the island wants to become climate-neutral by 2030. The measures are proving successful - the island already won the German Sustainability Award in 2015 and is certified as a green vacation destination by the international Green Globe organization.
