More info about Destination Nature

For about 30 years, parts of the Harz Mountains have been protected as a national park, to the delight of outdoor fans and Mother Nature. But there is also plenty on offer for culture lovers.

Highest mountain range in northern Germany, green protection zone for animals and plants, beloved local recreation area and vacation destination: The Harz mountains with their partly rugged mountain world are a unique and species-rich wilderness. The national park area is almost entirely forested and many tree regions are simply left to themselves. It goes without saying that this is a wonderful place to go hiking - a network of trails more than 8,000 kilometers long stretches through beech and spruce forests and across tree-free mountain heath all the way up to the Brocken, at 1,141 meters above sea level the highest peak in the low mountain range.

On the way, with luck, rare species such as black stork or lynx can be discovered. There are also numerous routes and bike parks for mountain bikers in the Harz Mountains. And all kinds of cozy towns and cities for culture lovers and connoisseurs. Goslar, for example, with its narrow medieval streets, colorful marketplace and cozy cafés - the old town and Goslar's Rammelsberg ore mine have even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
